German Celler goose at Hannover Show, 2009: this bird is particularly muted in colour.

However, Buff geese standardized in Germany (the Celler) are not the same shade of buff as the Americans. Celler buff is more muted, rather as in the clay-coloured fighting geese from Russia; in contrast, American buff is bright and brassy. This distinction can also be seen in the muted shade of Buff Toulouse found in Germany, in contrast to Buff Toulouse developed in the USA. The shades may be different due to independent mutations – or they may look different due to selection of birds for depth of colour, affected by modifier genes. The sex-linked, recessive buff gene certainly arose in Europe or Russia, but where – and how many times – is a moot point.

The colour continues to fascinate breeders. There are now Buff Toulouse and Buff Sebastopols, and a medium-weight Tufted Buff Goose. Originating in the USA, it was developed by Mrs Ruth Brooks by crossing an American crested Roman goose with an American Buff (see Chapter 10 for the colour genetics of a buff × white bird).
